Infusions are medication injections that work to modify your immune system’s reaction causing multiple sclerosis (MS) attacks. Infusion therapy can help lower risk of future MS attacks and disability progression. It might also improve MS symptoms.

Answers to Your Infusion Therapy Questions
Infusion therapy is the delivery of medication into your vein to slow or manage the progression of MS. It’s highly effective and can help limit future flare-ups and disability progression.
The medications can cause serious side effects. You need to be closely monitored during your infusions, and they should only be performed by experienced staff.
You can expect each infusion to take several hours. Your exact type of infusion and the time it takes may be different from other patients. Your treatment will be customized for your disease and its progression. We monitor you and adjust your medication regularly.
We offer both private and semi-private infusion therapy rooms. Patients can also benefit from our integrative medicine services, which includes relaxation programs, meditation and more. Your experience is very important to us, and we’ll do everything we can to help make it comfortable.
UC Health offers the following types of infusion therapies:
- Tysabri (natalizumab)—This medication is used to treat patients with relapsing forms of MS.
- Lemtrada (alemtuzumab)—This medication is used to treat patients with relapsing forms of MS who have had a poor response to two or more MS therapies.
- Ocrevus (ocrelizumab)—This medication is used to treat patients with relapsing or primary progressive forms of MS.
The side effects of infusion therapy can range from mild to severe depending on the patient. Each infused drug has its own potential side effects.
- Mild—Rashes, itching, hives.
- Moderate—Tachycardia, shortness of breath, swelling in mouth, lips or throat.
- Severe—Could be life threatening.
Infusion therapy can help reduce the severity and length of an MS relapse. It can also help patients manage symptoms, delay the progression of the disease and limit new flare-ups.
Infusion therapies are generally recommended for patients who have a poor prognosis or have aggressive MS. Discuss with your provider whether infusion therapy is right for you.
Infusion therapies are meant to help delay the progression of MS and limit new flare-ups. There is no cure for MS.
