Help Along the Way

Answers to Your Total Hip Replacement (Hip Arthroplasty) Questions

A total hip replacement can dramatically reduce pain. This procedure can especially benefit patients suffering from hip pain that limits daily activities, hip pain that persists while resting or sleeping, hip stiffness, limited mobility and pain that cannot be treated with medication or physical therapy.

The most common conditions that cause hip pain are osteoarthritis due to age-related wear and tear, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis and/or childhood hip disease.

While most hip replacement patients are between 50 and 80 years of age, surgery is related to need, not age, and depends on the level of pain and discomfort the patient is experiencing.

However, patients that receive a hip replacement at a younger age may need to have a second procedure performed later in life.

Following surgery, you may need some help with daily tasks such as cooking, shopping, bathing and laundry for several weeks after surgery.

If you live alone, your care team can help you make arrangements to have someone assist you at your home or stay in an extended care facility during your recovery after surgery.

Finally, most hip replacement surgeries are covered by insurance, but please contact your insurance provider to verify your coverage and for more information as needed.
