As a leading teaching institution, University of Cincinnati Medical Center receives many requests from referring physicians and hospitals to transfer patients who need tertiary care. These consultation and transfer requests are handled by our Transfer and Physician Referral Center (TPRC).

University of Cincinnati Medical Center has approximately 500,000 total inpatient and outpatient visits every year. University of Cincinnati Medical Center provides Cincinnati’s only:

We also provide care for some of our tiniest patients at our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), one of only three Level III NICUs in the region. Many of our physicians are also faculty physicians at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine – ranked among the Top 50 schools for research by US News & World Report. These physicians have access to the latest medical technology and clinical trial medications ensuring that patients receive the highest-quality care.
Patients Are Easily Transferred Into University of Cincinnati Medical Center
As part of our Admitting Department, TPRC streamlines transfers into University of Cincinnati Medical Center by arranging patient air or ground transportation. Patients may be transferred by University of Cincinnati Medical Center Air Care & Mobile Care, providing the Greater Cincinnati community air transport and three levels of ground transportation (Mobile Intensive Care, Advanced Life Support or Basic Life Support). It is the most comprehensive air and ground medical transport program in the region and the only program with licensed physicians and critical care supplies on every flight. Patients receive the appropriate level of care specialized to their needs on site. For added convenience, TPRC handles all pre-admission, insurance and medical records prior to patient arrival. There is an established escalation policy to ensure all transfers and referrals are handled efficiently.
Reducing Patient Transfer Times
By using the TPRC, transfer times can be reduced by as much as half so patients can receive the highly specialized medical care they need as quickly as possible. The TPRC facilitates direct communication between referring physicians and our specialists. To ensure this high level of efficiency, all transfers of stabilized patients – including newborns – from other facilities must be coordinated through the TPRC.

The TPRC is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by calling 513-584-BEDS (2337). TPRC staff makes it easy for referring physicians and hospitals to connect with the appropriate University of Cincinnati Medical Center specialists via teleconferencing. A TPRC representative remains on the line with all parties during communication to provide assistance.
