University of Cincinnati Medical Center Cincinnati C-STARS

A Joint Training Program With the Air Force

c-starsUniversity of Cincinnati Medical Center Cincinnati C-STARS (Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills) is a joint program between University of Cincinnati Medical Center and the Air Force offering training for military medical personnel in the areas of trauma and critical care.

The third program of its kind in the nation, C-STARS was created to enable Air Force health care providers to
refresh their skills by working side-by-side with their civilian colleagues treating trauma and critical care patients. University of Cincinnati Medical Center was chosen to sponsor C-STARS thanks to its national reputation as a teaching hospital and the high volume of trauma and critical care patients treated each year.

C-STARS Courses

14 classes per year, with class sizes ranging from 12 to 15 Air Force health care professionals, spending 14 days rotating through the C-STARS course:

  • Air Force medical personnel who provide ground support for deployed military operations will work closely with trauma service providers at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
  • Medical personnel assigned to the Air Force Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) rotate through intensive care units, with an emphasis on critical care and simulation training. CCATT personnel augment Air Care personnel further offering more trauma exposure, and they participate in field exercises at Lunken Air Field with local Air National Guard.
