The social determinants of health (SDoH) account for 30-55% of health outcomes yet few medical schools have objective criteria to determine the success of their instruction of this topic. Most schools do not offer experiential teaching of SDoH and the existing literature reveals that outcomes of teaching are mostly self-assessment or subjective reports. This study aims to review 500 reflection papers submitted by pediatric clerkship medical students at three US academic institutions. By analyzing the medical student reflections, we will describe the most encountered SDoH and the proposed level of interventions/solutions regarding these SDoH issues as cited by students. We will build on previous analysis work done by the University of Nebraska College of Medicine Department of Pediatrics by using an adapted social ecological framework to review the reflection papers. We hope this leads to further work in objectively understanding the depth of student comprehension and problem solving from the individual patient to societal level related to SDoH, as well as informing future SDoH curriculum development for trainees at all stages of medical training.
