What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an acid-free method of skin rejuvenation using special crystals to exfoliate the upper layers of skin. A vacuum-pressured device with a special handpiece is passed along the surface of the skin and sprays special crystals that remove dead skin cells from the epidermis. Sun damage, uneven texture and discoloration are treated with microdermabrasion. Acne-prone skin can also benefit from microdermabrasion. It can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands and arms. A layering treatment may be done to enhance the benefits of microdermabrasion using light acid. Treatments are done every 7 to 14 days initially and then usually every 4 to 12 weeks, as needed.

Procedure Benefits

  • Exfoliation
  • Smooths sun-damaged skin
  • Refines skin texture
  • More even skin tone
  • Improves mild acne

Private Consultation

Your personal skin care plan begins with a Visia Complexion Analysis, a photo of your skin measuring tone, texture, fine lines, pores, and sun spots. This is the foundation of your individualized skin care plan. Your skin care specialist and physician will review your medical history (including medicines) and lifestyle habits, and then discuss which treatments are recommended for your skin type. An individualized plan will be developed for treatment intervals and the use of clinically-based home care products.

Preparation

In order to help the physicians and skin care specialist determine if you are a good candidate for any peel, please advise them if you

  • Smoke
  • Take or have ever taken Accutane
  • Have a history of keloid formation
  • Use retinoids or other topical medications
  • Are prone to cold sore, fever blisters, or herpes

Procedure Overview

The skin is cleansed and prepped to ensure smooth passing of the microdermabrasion handpiece over the treatment area. As the special handpiece is passed along the skin, you may feel a light prickling or stinging sensation. In many cases more than one pass is used during treatment. Your skin may feel warm during and after treatment. The skin is then cleansed to remove excess particles and, if needed, an additional layering treatment is administered. Moisturizer and sun protection are applied to finish your treatment.

Recovery and Healing Time

No down time is expected with this procedure. Your skin may feel warm or tingly and be slightly pink or red, similar to a sun burn. Some flakiness and dryness are possible for a few days after the procedure. Moisturizing and avoidance of peeling any flaking skin are important. Makeup can be worn immediately after these treatments. The use of daily sunscreen is essential.

Procedure Risks

Microdermabrasion is milder than other types of chemical peels, and carries a much lower risk of complication. Risks include:

  • Changes in pigmentation
  • Allergic reaction
  • Infection such as cold sores if prone
  • Scarring (rare)
