Local children are invited to bring their bicycles to test their skills on fun navigational courses, just like the courses that police departments use for training, during West Chester Hospital’s Fourth Annual Bicycle Safety Rally on Sat., July 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Police officers from the UC Health West Chester Hospital Public Safety Bike Unit and the West Chester Police Department will demonstrate proper helmet safety and check kids’ bikes for defects that could cause injuries. The UC Health Trauma Services team will also be on site to provide injury prevention activities and information.
Kids will also have the chance to ride alongside police officers through the navigation course and receive helpful tips for safely riding and maneuvering their bikes.
Free bicycle checks will be provided by Trek Bicycle Stores, and refreshments will be provided by Jet’s Pizza and White Castle.
A variety of local organizations will also be participating in the event, including EnterTrainment Junction, Target, Mason and Maineville Police Departments, and the West Chester Township Fire Department. Gold Fish Swim School will be on hand to share swimming safety tips as well.
Bicyclists face a higher risk of crash-related injury and death than drivers of motor vehicles do, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which also estimates that there are approximately 500,000 emergency room visits related to bike accidents annually.
