Myles L. Pensak, MD, FACSMessage from Myles L. Pensak, Department Chair, Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery

Dear Colleague:

Greetings from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery. Beginning in early 2015, we’re pleased to share ENT Insights, an educational resource with information on the cutting-edge research, clinical trials and innovative treatments that are advancing the field. Our goal is to educate, inform, and collaborate with our peers, making ENT Insights one of the ways we create a dialogue with you – fellow clinicians who seek the best ways to care for your patients.

As part of our commitment to further both scientific and clinical solutions to otolaryngology issues, we partner with one of the top pediatric medical facilities, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where, our pediatric division is recognized as the preeminent airway training program in the world. In addition, we benefit from a productive collaboration with other departments including neurosurgery, as we team up on clinical and research projects to treat skull base tumors, balance disorders, and facial paralysis. The department is actively engaged in programmatic research with both the College-Conservatory of Music and College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati.

Our otolaryngologists perform many established procedures such as minimally invasive video-assisted thyroid and parathyroid surgery. We also seek to advance patient care by performing new procedures. Hypoglossal nerve stimulator implant therapy for obstructive sleep apnea was recently approved by the FDA, and ours is one of the few centers nationwide authorized to perform it.

Equally important is our auditory brainstem implantation program, as we are one of only 15 centers in the country performing the procedure. We maintain a hearing preservation approach to cochlear implantation, and are a clinical trial site for ongoing studies on the hybrid cochlear implant.

It is my hope that ENT Insights will keep you informed of the latest advances to help us together meet the challenges and exciting opportunities facing the field of otolaryngologic medicine. I encourage you to reach out directly to the physicians whose work is featured, and I look forward to sharing more as we continue to advance care.

Sincerely,

Myles L. Pensak, MD, FACS
