Neuroradiology Expert, Leader, & Tenured Professor
Achala Vagal, MD, MS, a board-certified neuroradiology expert, has served as a neuroradiologist at the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute since 2007. As a tenured Professor of Neuroradiology and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Radiology, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Dr. Vagal brings extensive expertise in advanced neuroimaging of cerebrovascular diseases. Her fellowship training allows her to contribute significantly to multidisciplinary collaborations with the Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center of the University of Cincinnati (UC) Neuroscience Institute. She also excels as the radiology leader of the Imaging Core Lab for various prestigious NIH-funded trials.
Leadership Roles and Recognitions
Dr. Vagal is not only an accomplished national and international medical expert but also a recipient of several honors and awards, including the University of Cincinnati Young Investigator Recognition Award. She has demonstrated her expertise in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans in stroke research, receiving the esteemed National American Roentgen Ray Society Radiology Research Scholarship award in 2012. She completed the prestigious Executive Leadership In Academic Medicine in 2022. Dr. Vagal's directorial role at the Imaging Management Center, housed at the University of Cincinnati, provides an excellent example of her clinical experience and project management skills, particularly for stroke imaging in various multicenter trials. She is also the Co-Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Research.
Contributions to Neuroradiology
As a neuroradiology expert, Dr. Vagal's academic areas of interest span a wide spectrum, including imaging in acute ischemic strokes, diagnostic radiology for intracranial hemorrhage brain injury, perfusion in acute strokes, and advanced neuroimaging of brain tumors. She is well-versed in various neuroimaging techniques, including advanced cerebrovascular imaging, contributing to her numerous award-winning presentations and multiple peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Vagal's dedication to her field has earned her the Stroke Innovation Award, the ASNR Women in Neuroradiology Leadership Award, and the 2020 and 2022 RSNA Honored Educator Award.
