UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute Earns Top Electrodiagnostic Laboratory Accreditation

Jul. 11, 2024

UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute is proud to announce that it has earned the highest designation of Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Laboratory Accreditation.

UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute is proud to announce that it has earned the highest designation of Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Laboratory Accreditation by the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) – Laboratory Accreditation with Exemplary Status. This makes UC Health the only health system in the region to receive this prestigious recognition and one of just thirteen labs in Ohio.

Unparalleled Expertise and Commitment to Excellence

This accreditation acknowledges a long-standing dedication to the highest quality, performance, and integrity level based on AANEM’s stringent standards. This recognition also emphasizes a commitment to excellence in diagnosing and treating neuromuscular conditions, from carpal tunnel syndrome to complex diseases like chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and ALS.

Dr. Hani Kushlaf, a UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute physician-researcher, and director of the UC Health Electromyography and Neuromuscular Ultrasound Laboratory, said, “With this prestigious accreditation, we ensure that our patients come first. Patients will choose our lab knowing they will have the highest quality electrodiagnostic study performed in the region.”

Unlike others in the region, which primarily focus on diagnosing orthopedic issues, UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute excels in neuromuscular testing and diagnostics using electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). A dedicated approach ensures early and accurate diagnosis, which is critical for timely and effective patient treatment.

Dedication to High-Quality Neuromuscular Diagnostics

UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute offers a full spectrum of diagnostic capabilities, enabling the handling of complex medical cases and ensuring patients receive the highest quality of care from the onset. Clinicians, technicians, and state-of-the-art equipment are at the forefront of medical technology and innovation, ensuring patient outcomes.

All of the providers are board-certified in electrodiagnostic medicine or clinical neurophysiology, reflecting a deeper level of training and expertise unmatched by others in our region. The team includes highly skilled technicians who excel in nerve conduction studies and provide compassionate patient care.

Compassionate and Patient-Centered Care

EMG Clinical Operations Supervisor Pattie Ellis said, “Our technicians are amazing. Nerve conduction studies are a challenging part of the procedure. Sometimes you must slow the test's tempo to allow the patient more time between stimulations.  We want to test the appropriate nerves to have the best data for the correct diagnosis and encourage the patient through the procedure. When patients come in, they are often anxious. Our techs listen, assess patients' needs, and explain everything to them. They are so empathetic and compassionate. It's a huge thing for a lab to have people that are that good. I would send my mom or my dad to any of them.”

The UC Health Electromyography and Neuromuscular Ultrasound Laboratory reflects the health system’s mission to excellence in academics, clinical care, and research through a dedication to training the next generation of neuromuscular specialists. The neurology residency and neuromuscular medicine fellowship programs ensure exceptional training, fostering the future of high-quality patient care.

This exemplary designation reflects UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute’s unwavering dedication to maintaining the highest standards of care and the most advanced diagnostic techniques for neuromuscular diseases.
