Oncology Social Work

The UC Cancer Institute’s oncology social work team—based at the UC Health Barrett Center treatment facility—offer counseling for patients and families with the goal of reducing stress for patients and families throughout all phases of cancer.

This includes:

  • Access to information to help patients and their families fully understand his or her diagnosis and treatment options
  • Support to help cope emotionally with a diagnosis of cancer
  • Understanding benefits and insurance coverage as well as options for financial assistance
  • Connecting to support groups, educational programs and counseling for patients and their families

Oncology social workers can also help patients understand how best to communicate with medical treatment team as well as give advice on talking to family members, friends and co-workers about their cancer experience. Social workers specialize in helping patients:

  • Cope with emotions associated with cancer: sadness, anger, worries, and fears
  • Reduce stress through relaxation techniques
  • Understand how cancer affects intimacy, fertility and self body image
  • Explore complementary and alternative medicine options
  • Evaluate clinical trials
  • Understand survivorship issues/life as a cancer survivor
  • Plan advance directives
